A Name-the-Dome contest is underway and Lafarge needs the public’s help.

Ask Plant Manager Jim Bachmann about the dome and he’ll tell you he’s heard it all from the Bow Valley, Calgary and beyond.

“I’ve heard it called the Thunderdome, I’ve heard it called the space ship, I’ve heard it called the solution to Canmore’s rabbit problems,” Bachmann said. “But it needs a name and I need your help.”

To have a shot at naming the dome, entrants can email [email protected] by Feb. 24, with their choice for the dome name, along with the entrant’s name and phone number.

The winner will receive a tour of the expansion and Lafarge will donate $1,000 to a charity of the winner’s choice.

But what exactly is the dome’s purpose? Bachmann helps to set aside the curiosity of what exactly it is and what it does.

“It’s actually a pretty complex piece of machinery,” he said.

“Basically it’s a keeper of all the raw materials we used to have to keep under temporary structures. Now we have a permanent structure that keeps it dry and keeps it not airborne so our friends in Exshaw and throughout the valley don’t have to deal with our dust. It’s really a win-win for a lot of reasons.”

The dome was created as part of Lafarge’s multi-hundred million-dollar expansion, which is set to go online this spring.
