Three Cochrane elementary school students might be destined for stardom.

Elizabeth Barrett Elementary students Willow Fluker, Danica Fisher, and Brett Fisher were selected to perform for the provincial auditions of GALALA, a national talent show for French-speaking youth aged five to 15.

All three children submitted video auditions to take part in the talent show, squaring off against six other acts from across Alberta. Winning performances from each provincial audition will compete in the grand finale in Hamilton in June.

Brett and Willow, who dance with Cochrane’s Snap Dance Studio, were selected to perform a dance duet, while Danica was selected to perform a magic act.

“I thought it would be fun to be on TV and I wanted to meet the other performers and watch their acts,” Willow said.

The three spent the day in Airdrie – where the show was being produced – Feb. 18 to record interviews, participate in a dress rehearsal, and then perform their acts in front of a live audience.

“My favourite part was meeting the other kids and making a new friend there. It was also exciting to do my act in front of big cameras. I was surprised when I got interviewed alone in front of a big camera,” Danica said.

In anticipation for the show’s airing, the kids can’t disclose who won during their taping. Cochrane fans can see how the trio did on June 4 by tuning into Unis TV, a sister channel of TV5 Quebec Canada.

“I think my favourite part probably was doing the dance in a new environment. I also really liked watching how the TV show gets made. What surprised me was that there were only eight contestants. I didn't know that. I thought there would be lots more,” Brett said.

All three were excited to be chosen to participate but were admittedly a little nervous. Their performances went over great in the end and they were all appreciative of the experience.

“Well, the first time, when we were allowed to practise once, I did a little mistake. I was proud of myself that I kept going even though I did that mistake. But then on the final round it went great. I was excited and a little nervous,” Danica said.

“I was very excited when it was finally time to perform. But I was also a bit nervous. I felt like we did a really good job,” Brett said.

“The performance was great. It was one of our best. We had high energy and we worked hard on timing, spotting and having high lifts,” Willow added.

The show will begin airing on April 9 and the finale is scheduled for June 18.
