Cochrane area-based Free Spirit Sanctuary (FSS) is wrapping up its second annual online auction fundraiser Nov. 20, looking to beef up winter supplies, food and funds for veterinary care for rescued wild and domestic horses.

According to Dr. Sandie Hucal, this year has posed a struggle for donations in the face of a lean economy.

“Like many other local non-profit rescues, FSS has been deeply impacted by the economic downturn in Alberta and has seen a drastic drop in donations,” said the sanctuary director in a recent press release.

The auction is promoted on Facebook to some 12,000 followers and the sanctuary, which also lends its support to Alberta’s wild horses, is hopeful for the support from the Cochrane business community.

The registered non-profit “provides a lifelong home to domestic and wild horses, donkeys and mules rescued from abuse, neglect or slaughter.”

The rescues range between a 40-acre and nearby 80-acre parcel of land, located 30 km northwest of Cochrane. In operation since 2007, Hucal has devoted her life to providing a place of healing for these animals.
