Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta is searching for two families who are looking to call a place home.

They have two available townhome condominiums in Cochrane that are part of a 10-unit condominium complex.

“Cochrane has a bit of an affordable housing issue. We are looking for families that are renting that are looking to provide stability, safety and security for their family but they can’t afford to purchase a home,” said Lisa Clement, director of family services.

She said that they recently purchased back the homes from previous homeowners who have moved on. Habitat offers mortgages with no interest no down payment geared towards the family income according to Clement.

Habitat’s homeownership model states that they empower families by providing a ‘hand up, not a handout.’

Some of the eligibility requirements for the families mentioned by Clement include that the family is within a certain low-income range and are interested in pursuing a homeownership opportunity.

She also added that the family must be willing to partner with them and contribute to ‘sweat equity’ hours, which the Habitat website described as ‘helping to build your own home, the homes of other Habitat homeowners and contribute to other habitat programs.’

“They partner with us to promote habitat’s mission and mandate, so basically promoting our work in the community,” Clement said “It’s about giving back.”

Habitat will be holding an information session in Cochrane March 10 from 6 to 7:45 p.m. at the Cochrane Toyota dealership. Clement said the session would include information on the homes, how the program works, what habitat does in the community and a bit about their mission and mandate.
