As the fundraising campaign ‘Rock the Waves’ approaches its halfway mark — sitting at a little over $4.4M of the $10.6M goal — the town announced this week that construction of the aquatic/curling and multi-sport project would begin March 23.

“We have received the development and building permits and construction fencing will be installed this week and next,” said Suzanne Gaida, senior manager of community services for the town, adding that construction would officially begin the week of March 23.

A community celebration at the site location, the Spray Lake Sawmills (SLS) Family Sports Centre, is slated for May 8 from 2-4 p.m., where community members are encouraged to join town officials to celebrate the facility build out — where construction will take place over the next 18-24 months with a grand opening anticipated in early 2017.

Gaida said the SLS Centre would be looking at ways to better communicate with facility users over the duration of the construction of ‘Phase 4’ regarding possible facility access issues as construction moves forward; there would likely be a message board on site and info at cochrane.ca.

The main entrance of the SLS Centre is expected to be closed for the duration of the construction period.

The facility build will take place at SLS Totem One entrance.

A total of $45M is budgeted for the multi-use facility.
