MMA trains body, mind

Whatever your age or fitness ability, the wide range of programs at Elite Pro Fitness may be just what is needed to get you off the couch and into a healthier lifestyle.

Whatever your age or fitness ability, the wide range of programs at Elite Pro Fitness may be just what is needed to get you off the couch and into a healthier lifestyle.

Under the tutelage of lead instructor Dean Cole, gym goers can try their hands at specialized fitness classes like kettle bell training and Zumba, or one of the many mixed martial arts sessions.

“We’re a group-training fitness centre, not a gym,” said the energetic fitness trainer. “You learn how to train properly for you. This way, everyone gets the results they want, they don’t just copy my moves.”

Cole has an extensive background in martial arts, having studied 13 different forms of the ancient training methods. Coupled with more than 25 years of fitness experience, the head instructor said he’s witnessed the good and the bad of the fitness industry. Because of this, he said his goal is to focus on training participants safely and effectively.

The mixed martial arts classes include jiu-jitsu and kickboxing. Besides giving participants a full body workout, Cole said the classes teach self-defence skills, as well as give lessons in body mechanics.

“It isn’t about fighting,” he added. “All martial arts are about training the mind and the body to work together.”

Cole said the core martial arts class is Kick Jitsu, a combination of jiu-jitsu and kickboxing, as well as strength, acrobatics and cardiovascular training. The class, which was created by Cole, is available for children, youth, teens and adults.
