Moose on the loose finds new home

A moose was recently relocated last week after wandering into a residential area in Cochrane.

While it was not the first moose sighting in the Sunterra area – several sightings have been reported in the last year –it was one of the few moose sightings that required Alberta Fish and Wildlife Officers to intervene and help relocate the animal.

Last Friday at approximately 1:30 p.m., Cochrane Fish and Wildlife Officers “safely immobilized” a moose in the Sunterra Ridge Place area and relocated the animal to the far northwest of town.

“The young bull moose had lost his way and wandered into close proximity to the schools in that area. For both his safety and the safety of the people in the area, officers elected to tranquilize the animal,” Brendan Cox, Alberta Fish and Wildlife public affairs officer explained in an email.

“Ultimately, this was done safely and effectively.”

Alberta Fish and Wildlife officials have recommend that wildlife should never be approached by humans.

If anyone is to come across a moose while out, tips from wildlife officials are to:

– Try making yourself look larger

– Speak in an authoritative tone

– Back away slowly

– Put obstacles in between yourself and the animal

– Get to a more populated or safe area

– Call Alberta Fish and Wildlife at 1-800-642-3800
