Rooftops in Morley will be getting a green update soon.
In align with a greener Alberta, the Bearspaw band received a $76,032 grant earlier this year to assist with the acquisition and installation of solar panels.
“This support will lead to sustainable electricity cost savings for your centres and a clean and sustainable source of energy for the buildings,” Richard Feehan, minister of Indigenous Relations stated in the letter.
Over the next couple of weeks, the Centex gas station and Bearspaw Youth Centre will be equipped with a solar voltaic panel system.
Rob Shotclose, CEO of the Bearspaw band, said when the government released the new grants last year, the band administration sent applications for everything in line with the band’s goals, and they were “happy” to receive the money for the new energy-efficient system.
The letter of approval came a day after the provincial government announced a new $36-million rebate program, over the next two years, for homes and businesses that want to install solar panels.
“There’s a lot of buzz in Alberta around small-scale solar. This program will make solar power affordable for more Albertans,” Shannon Phillips, minister of environment and parks, and minister responsible for the climate change office, said in a press release.
Typically, solar modules last 30 to 40 years, according to Solar Alberta.
It is the province’s goal to have 10,000 solar panel equipped rooftops by 2020.
