Museum fundraiser rescheduled

Heavy rain and flooding forced the postponement of the Cochrane Historical & Archival Preservation Society's (CHAPS) fundraiser and anniversary event that was to be held over the past weekend.

The Chautauqua to mark CHAPS' 20th year as a charitable non-profit organization operating in Cochrane and surrounding area as well as the fifth year of the Cochrane Historical Museum and the 110th year of the Davies “Hospital” building will now be held on July 21.

Due to flood damage caused in March, CHAPS has expanded the celebrations into a Flood Relief Fundraiser. Fast work by CHAPS president Larry Want on Friday prevented further damage to the museum as flooding affected areas of town including the Cochrane Historic Ranche, where the museum is located.

The event will highlight the early settlement of Cochrane and surrounding area through displays, performances and activities.

A Chautauqua is “an adult education movement popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries featuring entertainment and culture with speakers, teachers, preachers, and specialists.”

CHAPS will also be attending tonight's council meeting to request $10,000 to assist with repairs to damage caused by the flooding in March. The money, if granted, would come from the Community Grant Reserves.
