Dogs of all shapes and sizes will be strutting their stuff through Cochrane for the 13th annual Mutt Strut.

The fundraiser put on by the Cochrane and Area Humane Society will be happening again this year with pets and their owners encouraged to join in on the four-legged fun.

Denise Meade, the fund development manager at the Cochrane and Area Humane Society, said all of the money raised goes towards general operations of the shelter; Meade said that includes things such as spaying and neutering and feeding the animals.

“Last year the event raised $35,000 and we hope to raise the same amount this year,” she said.

The event will take place Sept. 6 at Mitford Park. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the 5 km walk begins at 10 a.m.

She said there would be a lot of goodies and treats along the route and there would also be several prizes and contests throughout the day, including talent and best dressed.

Prizes include doggie gift baskets, pet portrait sessions and other exciting pet prizes. The top fundraiser for the event will win a year’s supply of dog food.

There are several new features to the event this year, including a new route for the walk.

“The path we had used before had been under repair, so we didn’t want to take chances in case it wasn’t prepared,” explained Meade.

This year there will be a bowl-licking competition added to the competition and sponsored by Global Pet Foods Cochrane. Meade said dogs are divided into class sizes of small, medium and large, and five from each class size compete against each other. They have to eat a bowl of food and whoever finishes the fastest goes on to the finals – where the top three will compete to be the ultimate bowl licking winner.

Another new addition Meade mentioned would be a barbecue that will start at 11:30 a.m. with both beef and veggie burgers. She said if you registered and raised at least $10 then the barbecue is free, otherwise it is by donation.

Those interested can register as teams or individually online at cochranehumane.ca.
