Nakoda Elementary students put the finishing touches on their playground reclamation project this week.

For the past six weeks the Grade 1 and Grade 4 classes, with help from education assistants Collindra Mark and Jennifer Poucette, and teacher Scott MacDonald, have been learning how to restore and care for the playground area after construction in the area had left the grounds unsightly.

“The children loved it, they are very proud of their work,” said Michelle Onyebuchi, Grade 1 teacher.

The students replaced soil and moved the rocks in the area to create a garden, and with the help of high school shop teacher, Dan Law, also made a secondary garden with planter boxes.

“The students were very excited to put their handprints and their names on the planter boxes today,” Onyebuchi said.

More than 40 students helped with the project, planting a variety of flowers and shrubs while learning about taking pride in their work and giving back to the community.

“The children have been checking on the plants every day – it is very cute,” Onyebuchi said.

Nakoda Elementary School opened in 2012 for preschool to Grade 5 students, located on the Stoney First Nation reservation in Morley.
