Name that new school

Rocky View Schools (RVS) is looking to the community to help name two new schools.

Rocky View Schools (RVS) is looking to the community to help name two new schools.

The currently unnamed kindergarten-Grade 8 school in the Fireside community of Cochrane, as well as a kindergarten-Grade 8 school in the Windsong community of Airdrie, are both scheduled to open September 2017.

“We think (this contest) is a great opportunity for the community to get involved, and it allows Rocky View Schools to be even more a part of the community,” said RVS Director of Facility Planning Colette Winter.

Criteria for the new names include specifications that submissions have significance for the students, parents and community, be easily identifiable and create a distinct identity.

If submissions recognize prominent community members, those submissions should only consider those individuals posthumously with a minimum of 10 years after death.

“We can’t use living people right now. So we’re looking for if (they were) active in the community, or if someone thinks a particular person would be an excellent candidate,” Winter said.

Those who have their submission chosen will have their name inscribed on a plaque, which will be hung in each of the new schools. School names will be chosen by a committee, which will include RVS board of trustees members and members of the community.

“We’ll have some community members as well as some administration,” Winter said. “We can’t have everybody, but we have to have a select few.”

RVS previously approved Cooper’s Crossing School as the name for the new kindergarten to Grade 4 school, and H. Lorimer School for the new kindergarten to Grade 8 school, both scheduled to open in Airdrie in September.

According to Winter, the names for the new schools will likely be chosen by the end of June. The contest runs until Feb. 1. For more information, visit rockyview.ab.ca
