Cochrane RCMP will be participating in National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day tomorrow (Dec. 7).

The event is part of a nationwide initiative to combat impaired driving in Canada. Cochrane RCMP will be conducting several checkstops at various locations in and around the Cochrane area.

The RCMP encourage people to be a designated driver or ask drivers to call a taxi or ride share service. Acting Cochrane detachment commander staff Sgt. Dave Brunner tells Cochranites to plan ahead, make good choices and celebrate safely this holiday season.

"Impaired driving - whether the driver is impaired by alcohol, drugs, or extreme fatigue - is never okay.  There is always another option,” said Brunner.

"We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure our roads are safe for all travellers".

Unsafe weather conditions, poor visibility and fatigue can present challenges for drivers. The RCMP recommend that drivers allow extra time for their commute, maintain a safe five second distance between you and the vehicle in front of you, and keep lights and signals in good working order to be visible to other road users.

“You should never drive impaired or get into a car with an impaired driver. There’s no excuse,” says Supt. Rick Gardner, Alberta Sheriffs.

“Wherever you live, the biggest risk is not about getting caught, it is about the possibility that you may hurt someone, or yourself, on the way home.”

The province’s RCMP will continue to work with Alberta Sheriffs and other law enforcement and safety partners to ensure Albertans make the right driving decisions.
