No Cochrane area ranches on quarantine list for bovine TB outbreak

Cochrane area ranches are not included in the list of those quarantined as a result of last week’s bovine tuberculosis (TB) outbreak, according to Alberta Agriculture.

Cochrane area ranches are not included in the list of those quarantined as a result of last week’s bovine tuberculosis (TB) outbreak, according to Alberta Agriculture.

Oneil Carlier, minister of agriculture and forestry, said the disease outbreak is not expected to have market implications.

“Isolated cases of bovine TB are periodically reported in Alberta and other jurisdictions,” said Carlier in a press release issued this week.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Bovine TB is a federally reportable disease, identified as a contagious disease of both animals and humans caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis).

The CFIA was notified in September by the U.S. Department of Agriculture that a bovine TB case was detected in an Alberta cow slaughtered south of the border.

The cow was traced back to a ranch in Jenner, Alta. – 50 km northeast of Brooks.

The minister added that the province is working with the federal government and the ministry is in regular conversation with Alberta Beef Producers. It is also working closely with the CFIA, which is leading the ongoing investigation.
