Off-duty county fire fighters scrutineering

Members of the Rocky View County Firefighters Association, Local 4794, are keen to offer up their services while off-duty this election season.

Members of the Rocky View County Firefighters Association, Local 4794, are keen to offer up their services while off-duty this election season.

Local 4794 president Jeff Salkeld is anticipating that upwards of 30 county firefighters will be donating their time for the Oct. 16 county election as scrutineers at the 10 polling stations.

“We are looking to help out our community and one of the opportunities that was brought to us was to be scrutineers,” he said, adding that firefighters are “well-equipped” for the volunteer work, given how entrenched they are in the community.

The initiative was in response to the county’s decision to not create an electors’ list.

“I personally hold the privilege to vote in high regard,” said Salkeld. “Whether they need 40 people or just one or two … we just want to help out.”

County firefighters who want to help out will be heading to “scrutineering school” in their spare time on April 30, to get up to speed on the Municipal Government Act and go over the role of being a scrutineer.

Those interested in taking part must RSVP by the morning of April 28 to [email protected]. Scrutineers must be at least 18 years of age and are appointed to represent a candidate at a polling station.
