Old Shell station being torn down

The former Shell gas station, that now sits empty along Highway 1A beside the KFC restaurant, will soon be demolished.

The former Shell gas station, that now sits empty along Highway 1A beside the KFC restaurant, will soon be demolished.

At a cost of no more than $80,000 (expected by administration to be more in the $60,000 range), the space will be used, at least for now, for a graveled, secondary parking access area for the KFC.

Cochrane’s senior manager of community services, Suzanne Gaida, said the demolition should be done soon, as an environmental assessment had been completed on the building to identify any contaminates present, and that it would not be safe to leave the building open to possible vandalism.

Gaida said Shell was not responsible for the demolition of the building, but only leaving the land in a clean state, including the removal of gas tanks that were under the ground, all of which was completed several months ago.

The town purchased the land the Shell station occupied, but has no plans yet on what the land will ultimately be used for.
