One set of remains found west of Cochrane earlier this year have been identified as missing Calgary man Fletcher Kimmel.

The 30-year-old was last seen in the northeast part of Calgary on Sept. 27, 2016.

Kimmel’s body was found on Jan. 29, in a wooded area near Jumpingpound Demonstration Forest after a male stumbled upon the body embedded in snow and ice off of Highway 68, south of the Trans Canada Highway. Cochrane RCMP responded to the call and due to the conditions that day, the Rocky View Fire Department was brought in to assist.

Family and friends shared on Friends of Kimmel’s Facebook page on Sunday that “it is with heavy hearts we spread this news and that this is not the outcome we have hoped for.”

The Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit is investigating to determine the circumstances that led to Kimmel’s death.

Kimmel’s funeral is scheduled for this Saturday in Brooks.

RCMP officers are still working to identify the other set of human remains found on the Nation last month.

On Jan. 25 a Stoney Nakoda First Nation resident reported finding remains after his dog discovered what appeared to be a human bone – it was later determined by the Calgary Chief Medical Examiner to be a human jawbone.

Cochrane RCMP, RCMP Major Crimes and RCMP Police Dog Services returned to the scene the following day, conducting a search of the area and found four bones. Two of the bones were confirmed as human, a lower jaw and a skull. The other two bones were ruled out as animal bones, according to Cpl. Curtis Peters.

Any set of human remains found is treated as suspicious until known otherwise, RCMP said.

Once a body or remains are found, investigators will compare the findings with missing persons from the area – investigators will be looking into missing persons cases from Cochrane, surrounding communities and Calgary..

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Cochrane detachment at 403-932-2211 or if you want to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
