Foodies are beckoned to unite June 6 at St. Andrew’s United Church for an event that seeks to ‘inspire, transform, connect’ — ‘FoodX Cochrane’.

The event, which runs from 6-9 p.m., boasts an esteemed panel of guest speakers, including Rob Avis from Verge Permaculture, Rene Michalak of ReThink Red Deer, Paul Hughes from Grow Calgary and Brenda Barritt from Earth Works Farm.

“It’s an opportunity for the community to gather and discuss the how, where and what about our food,” explained Karla Cox of Provisions Permaculture, who is co-producing the event with the Cochrane CookHouse and the Cochrane Environmental Action Committee (CEAC).

“…Everything from the danger of GMO’s, to the importance of local and organics, the right to grow and raise your own food and how to do it ethically and naturally.”

Cox said following the guest speakers, a community discussion would be facilitated, offering “your chance to voice what matters to you the most”.

“It really fits in line with what we’re trying to do here,” said Keane Wiebe from the CookHouse, adding that it’s a perfect opportunity for people to learn about permaculture techniques and how to incorporate the concepts into their own backyards to “rebuild the earth and community at the same time”.

Wiebe said he is looking forward to some of the discussion on food policy and food sovereignty, adding that people have already begun registering for the event.

The event is free, although donations will be gratefully received at the door to offset event costs.

Advance registration at cochranecookhouse.ca is recommended.
