Parnell embarks on new initiative helping Right to Play

Martin Parnell may have just finished his five-year quest for Right to Play, raising just over $1 million, but that doesn’t mean he is finished raising money for the program. “It is a bit of a change and transition period.

Martin Parnell may have just finished his five-year quest for Right to Play, raising just over $1 million, but that doesn’t mean he is finished raising money for the program.

“It is a bit of a change and transition period. Having done the five year quest for kids initiative, that was a huge undertaking,” said Parnell. “Locally, I’ll be doing things with Right to Play, but I’ll be the one supporting them, I won’t be organizing a ton of events.”

A local Right to Play team that will receive support from Parnell is the Redwood Meadows and Area Team with Carol Scarratt leading the charge. Parnell is their Right to Play athletic ambassador.

Scarratt said that their team is made up of all volunteers with all ‘proceeds going to Right to Play Canada for their work around the world and over 40 First Nations communities within Canada.’

To date, Scarratt said that the Redwood Meadows team has raised over $20,000 to help bring Right to Play programs for a year to ‘over 400 children worldwide.’

She said this is their fifth year as a team and their goal is ‘5 for 5 – five events in support of Right to Play.’

So far they have a ‘Let it Snow…Shoe’ event, with an original date of Feb. 22 but is being rescheduled due to lack of snow in the area.

On March 7, Parnell will be giving a speech called ‘From Ordinary to Extraordinary’ at the Redwood House. Parnell will be sharing his strategies ‘on how to unlock your potential and achieve goals you never thought possible.’

On April 19 there will be a Right to Play display at the Redwood Meadows Earth Day celebration.

In May, with a date yet to be determined, they will be holding a garage sale with funds going to Right to Play.

Their final event is the fifth annual Right to Play Day in Redwood Meadows with a family fun run, brunch and silent auction.
