Cochrane town council will be presented an application from the town administration about taking part in a feasibility study regarding a passenger rail service between Calgary, Cochrane, Canmore, Banff, and Lake Louise at the next council meeting on Feb. 22.

Canmore council voted on Feb. 9 to support the Town of Banff’s application for a provincial grant to undertake a full feasibility study into the idea

“This has been initiated by the Town of Banff and the application for the Alberta Community Partnership grant has been made by Banff as sort of a lead in the project,” said Julian deCocq, chief administrative officer for the Town of Cochrane.

deCocq said administration intends to recommend to council that the town take part in the study as well.

“It will determine what it would look like to reestablish some sort of passenger rail between here and Lake Louise,” deCocq said.

Much like Cochrane, Canmore has been working toward reducing the number of vehicles on the road.

The feasibility study scope includes looking at the infrastructure required, where stations would be located, social, environmental and economic impacts, capital and operating costs and implementation planning.
