Police are advising Albertans to plan accordingly when venturing into the backcountry.

“People should prepare themselves for the unknown,” said Cpl. Mel Calahasen of the Cochrane RCMP. “Let someone know where you’re going, bring food and water, even pass along your vehicle description.”

The caution serves as a reminder after a Calgary man was reported missing to Cochrane RCMP May 21. The man’s Jeep had become stuck in the backcountry after travelling off road. The 28 year old walked all night before being located by a Kananaskis Emergency Services conservation officer at a rural airstrip.

The dangers of being unprepared for such a situation can be life threatening, said Calahasen. Keep in mind that cell phone service in remote areas can be limited or non-existent, he added.
