The Cochrane Syrian Refugee Action Group held its first meeting on Dec. 16 and has initiated the planning process of bringing a refugee family to Cochrane.

The group plans to privately sponsor a Syrian family seeking refuge, either on their own or through a charitable organization.

The group will be responsible for providing the family with things such as: housing, clothing, food, transportation, employment, and anything else they’ll need to adjust to life in Canada.

To support a family of five for one year in Canada, the group will be expected to donate $29,700.

The Cochrane Syrian Refugee Action Group plans to meet again in the new year with designated coordinators.

Between now and then, they plan to reach out to various charitable organizations in the community for support with their initiative.

They are still looking for volunteers so anyone looking to get involved or seeking more information is asked to contact Andy Marshall at [email protected] or Liz Giles [email protected]
