Officer dragged

A Cochrane officer sustained minor injuries after being dragged by a truck when the driver was trying to avoid arrest.

On Saturday, Cochrane RCMP were called to assist a Sheriff with the Integrated Traffic Unit, who had stopped a suspicious vehicle on Quigley Drive and Highway 22.

The Sherriff was attempting to make an arrest when the suspect drove the truck forward, hitting the Cochrane RCMP officer and dragging the officer on the road.

The Cochrane RCMP member was transported to the hospital by EMS with minor injuries. The officer had road rash and a minor concussion, said Sgt. Jeff Campbell.

The RCMP attempted a short pursuit of the truck but lost the vehicle once it entered the city limits. The truck was a white GMC Sierra pickup with a male driver and female passenger.

RCMP is asking anyone with information on the incident to report it to the detachment at 403-932-2211 or call Crime Stoppers, to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Calgary Police chased Justin Charles Cassoff, of Cochrane, in a high-speed pursuit car chase for four hours last Tuesday.

The incident started around noon when officers attempted a routine traffic stop after noticing the dark blue Dodge Caravan heading east on Stoney Trail at Crowchild Trail NW in Calgary.

The suspect drove off in the vehicle and a HAWCS police helicopter was called in to help locate the vehicle. The chase lasted approximately four and a half hours, when Cassoff was arrested at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the Rocky Ridge area of the city.

The 31-year-old from Cochrane was treated in an ambulance before being taken into custody. Cassoff was charged with 11 charges including hit and run and dangerous driving.

Single vehicle rollover, passenger in critical condition

A man was airlifted to hospital after a single vehicle rollover on Sunday.

The driver and passenger were driving on Highway 1X when the driver swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle, drove in the ditch and over-corrected resulting in a rollover, said Sgt. Jeff Campbell.

The female driver sustained minor injuries, while the male passenger suffered a serious injury and was airlifted to hospital by STARS air ambulance.

At press time the passenger was listed as stable but still critical condition.

Speed and alcohol are not considered to be a factor. The investigation is ongoing.

Man charged with mischief

A Cochrane man was recently charged with mischief after lying to the police about being robbed at gunpoint.

The 34-year-old male told RCMP that three native men robbed him at gunpoint under the bridge on Highway 22 and took his cell phone and wallet on Saturday.

Sgt. Jeff Campbell from the Cochrane Detachment said after investigating the incident, it was unfounded and the RCMP laid charges against the Cochrane man.
