So, would you like to be a rock star?

If you would (and who wouldn’t?) your opportunity is just around the corner.

Shelley Gittel (a.k.a. Miss Mozart) is organizing Cochrane’s first ‘Rock Band’ music instruction, where kids ages eight and up can have their chance to shred the strings of a guitar or bass, pound away at the beat of a drum or belt out a solid rock and roll vocal.

Anyone with an instrument can sign up, and Gittel said even those with limited experience on their instrument or vocals can come be part of a group and learn — but if they are playing guitar, bass, drums or otherwise, they will need to bring their own instrument.

Each rock ensemble will be made up of three to six members, with the style of music being determined based on each individuals’ likes and dislikes.

Gittel has brought in two local rock music aficionados – Jesse Kopala and Kade Wolfe – both of whom will teach the kids on all instruments and vocals.

Kopala and Wolfe each performed at last weekend’s Cochrane Fall Fair. To register for ‘Rock Band’, which will start rocking in mid-September at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre, call Gittel at 403-467-8375. The cost of the program is $85 per month, and will be held Tuesday evenings.

Turning young Cochranites into rock stars isn’t the only thing on Gittel’s agenda.

The Cochrane Glee Club is getting ready to be part of this year’s Cochrane Labour Day Parade Sept. 7, and the group is looking for more youngsters to get involved with the relatively-new local group.

“Our goal is to get kids involved in the community,” said Gittel, “not just be onlookers.”

With about 60 kids in the club so far, Gittel said the Glee Club has expanded into Calgary – around 35 current members of the club are from Cochrane.

Kids aged five to 12 make up the Glee Club, but there is also a ‘mini club’, with children two to four years of age.

Next up for the Glee Club will be the Cochrane Outhouse Races.

Gittel said they plan on putting on quite a show during the annual Cochrane event, which this year will roll down Main Street Sept. 26.

If you would like to be part of the Cochrane Glee Club or ‘mini club’, contact Gittel by phone or email ([email protected]) or visit gleeclub.ca.
