Wild Rose MP Blake Richards’ Rocky Mountain Hockey Challenge was awarded a $10,000 grant earlier this month in recognition of the charity event’s success.

The charity and its title sponsor, Bow Valley Credit Union, were chosen by Concentra Financial as part of its emPOWERING Your Communities campaign from a pool of over 70 initiatives across Canada to receive the award.

“We’re thrilled to receive the money from this grant, and it will directly go to helping out Victims’ Services groups in the area,” said Richards.

“I’m incredibly honoured to have had the opportunity to raise funds for the charity.

“When this started, I wanted to choose a charity which had services that ran throughout my entire riding,” said Richards.

“I felt that having the money from the (hockey challenge) go to Victims’ Services groups in the area was a logical extension of some of the work I’ve been doing in Parliament in relation to subjects such as criminal justice.

“I’m especially thankful to Larry Bohn and the Bow Valley Credit Union for their long standing support of our initiative.”

The event, which has raised over $280,000 for Victims’ Services groups since its inception in 2008, and has included past participants such as ex-NHL players Kelly Hrudey and Perry Berezan, was selected by Concentra as a local project championed by a Credit Union, which demonstrated Credit Union values and leadership within the community.

“We’ve been a proud partner with Blake in supporting Victims’ Services for six years now,” said Larry Bohn, president of the Bow Valley Credit Union. “I’m very excited to receive this national recognition and look forward to continuing our contribution to this important cause.”

Details of this year’s charity event, tentatively scheduled for the second week of September, are expected to be announced in the near future.
