Rocky View School officials are seeking feedback about electoral ward boundaries in the upcoming weeks.
RVS is the fifth-largest school board in the province with 22,000 students in 49 schools. Currently, the electoral boundaries consists of six wards and seven trustees with ward four covering Springbank and Bragg Creek; ward five covering Westbrook and Bearspaw; and ward six covering the Town of Cochrane – each ward has one trustee with the exception of the City of Aridrie that has two trustees.
In the last five years the total population of the region has increased to 145,618 from 122,220 with ward four decreasing by two per cent, ward five decreasing by one per cent, and ward six increasing by one per cent with a population increase to 23,084 from 17,580.
RVS is proposing four different options:
• Five wards with seven trustees, removing the Town of Cochrane ward and expanding ward one, with three trustees in Airdrie.
• Six wards with seven trustees, combining ward four and five, designating ward two to just the city of Chestermere.
• Seven wards with nine trustees, adding a ward for the city of Chestermere and three trustees in Airdrie.
• Four wards with five trustees, combining ward one and three, with two trustees, and combining ward four and five.
Input is welcome and encouraged online or at any upcoming RVS meetings until December.
The review, inclusive of public consultation, will be completed by next February with any changes to take place for the next municipal election in October 2017.
