Rocky View Schools, along with local and provincial representatives, announced the new K-8 school in Sunset Ridge in October of 2013. The school is expected to open September 2016.

Rocky View Schools’ (RVS) board trustee Fiona Gilbert wants Cochrane parents who will be affected by the opening of the new school in Sunset Ridge to come out and voice their opinion on the future school’s catchment area.

A community consultation will be held May 13 at Mitford School from 7-9 p.m., and Gilbert is urging people to get involved.

“In my opinion, both as a trustee and as a parent with kids in these schools, it is super important to attend and get informed,” said Gilbert. “As the decision being made has the potential to impact a majority of families in Cochrane and set RVS in a direction for the next number of years, I want to make sure we get it right.”

Gilbert said RVS will present options and variations as to the attendance boundary for the kindergarten to Grade 8 Sunset school and the resulting impact it will have on other Cochrane schools.

“From the feedback gathered at this meeting, and online for a couple of weeks after, the board will be making a decision by the end of June this year as to the new school attendance boundaries for Cochrane,” Gilbert said, adding that there are about 2,500 K-8 students currently in Cochrane schools.

Gilbert, who is the RVS trustee for the town of Cochrane, said she was concerned a lot of parents were unaware of the May 13 meeting, and wanted to ensure both parents and potential students had a chance to attend.

“We need to hear from parents and students as to what they think is the best option for our community.”
