James Fay, 4, tests out the newest old attraction in town at Cochrane Toyota on Jan. 21. A 1956 ride-on horse, which was a staple at most grocery stores back in the day, has been restored and is on display and available to ride for a dime at Cochrane Toyota.

The vintage coin-operated addition, Sandy, was introduced to Cochrane Toyota last Thursday.

“I heard about these (horses) and thought it would be perfect for Cochrane,” said Alex Baum, Cochrane Toyota dealer principal. “We have a kids centre here but you can’t be in Cochrane without a horse.”

Sandy, the vintage coin-operated aluminum horse, was originally built in 1956 and has since been refurbished and can be ridden for an American dime.

“We have so many Cochrane kids that come by that have horses at home,” Baum explained. “It was absolutely natural to have it.”

The coin-operated horse was found in Las Vegas. Baum explained he was down in Nevada cheering on Cochranite Tanner Milan during the National Finals Rodeo last year, when he found Sandy.

“It is awesome – I hope we can wear it out,” Baum beamed.

Sandy was unveiled on Jan. 21 and will be a permanent addition to the dealership. The 60-year-old horse still plays the original music and if you pull the reins, Sandy will move faster. To visit the new addition to the Cochrane Toyota family, visit the dealership located at 8 River Heights Drive, just off Highway 22.
