The Morley Skateboard Association is kick-starting its fundraising to bring a skate park to Morley.

Organizer Tyree Wildman said the committee is aiming for a fundraising goal of $650,000.

“Basically, we are just going to start to fundraise our own money and help put towards a skateboard park – we are [also] trying to get sponsors to help get it going quicker,” Wildman said.

The annual Morley Skate Jam was held Oct. 8 inviting interested community members to share their skate park ideas and bringing out tons of youth, showing the desire for the venue.

“It’s a huge dream of theirs – and it gives [youth] an alternative to doing bad stuff,” said Levie Switzer, volunteer for The Inside/organizer for the Morley Skate Jam.

“You really see the need with something like this, when you see kids coming out to these events – last year there were 100 kids.”

According to an organizer’s post on the official Facebook page, the committee needs another $1,000 to get the blueprints and proposed projections from New Line Skateparks, which met with the committee earlier in the year to discuss locations, budgets and design.

Wildman said they are still searching for the perfect location in Morley for the park – saying if they do not meet the goal they can settle on a smaller skate park “but we are trying to set the highest goal we can get.”

“Honestly, there is this huge stigma around skateboarding that it is all bad, but there really is a lot of good young men that are good examples,” Switzer said.
