If your new year’s resolution is to be more active in 2016, Spray Lake Sawmills (SLS) Family Sports Centre is ready to meet your needs.

The centre, located at 800 Griffin Road East, offers a variety of registered and drop-in programs ranging skating to martial arts to dance. And with another calendar year starting, the facility is preparing to see an increase in membership mainly due to New Year’s resolutions.

“We’ll see that (our facility) will get busier with everyone getting back into their schedules after the holidays as well as thanks to New Year’s resolutions,” said Shawna Kerr-Smith, Events and Marketing Coordinator at the facility.

Although the facility will be taking on a significant increase in memberships, they’re prepared.

“We offer over 41 drop-in classes so there is a variety and selection for everyone, there’s always something that somebody can fit into,” said Kerr-Smith. “There’s also enough variety in classes running at any particular time that there’s no reason for any class to be over-filled.”

And in the rare case that does happen, Jessie Jacobs, a trainer at SLS Family Sports Centre, says “there’s always an option” for people looking to exercise, be it “the fitness centre or the running track.”

Tracy Thorogood, another trainer at SLS Family Sports Centre, is no stranger to this increase but knows that it won’t last long.

“People go too hard too fast,” said Thorogood. “People do everything at once – they quit eating junk, they quit smoking, they quit drinking, and start exercising.”

Both trainers recommend anyone trying to make a lasting commitment to be healthier in the new year should “set smart goals” and “start simple.”

They also suggest “making an appointment with a trainer” in order to “make yourself accountable” to your goals and ensure you’re meeting your “specific needs and abilities.”

For those looking to lose weight in the new year, both trainers have some advice.

“Drop the alcohol,” said Jacobs.

“Limit your sugar and change your exercise routine,” said Thorogood.

For people with busy schedules and little free time, the facility is prepared with long hours of operation and “family activities.”
