Got an idea, but not sure if it's viable?

Need some help with branding/marketing?

Want to get the lowdown on setting up your corporation and basic finances?

The Town of Cochrane, courtesy of economic development, is looking to answer these questions and more with the launch of a new, registered program for budding, launching or learning entrepreneurs.

SMARTstart, which first piloted in Canmore in 2012 and has been a growing success for six years in the City of Airdrie, will be running this September in Cochrane. The program is provincially funded through Community Futures West.

Those who think they may be a good fit as either a participant or mentor are encouraged to attend one of three free info sessions in the coming weeks at the Cochrane Public Library – Thursday, May 16 from 12-1 p.m.; Thursday May 16 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.; or Thursday June 6 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

"It's meant to give entrepreneurs skills they may not have," explained Rob Kalinovich with economic development. "There are no business topics that are off-limits."

The format includes online learning, in-person seminars and one-on-one mentoring with successful entrepreneurs and personalized advice from a support network. There will be 2-3 sessions held per month and Kalinovich stressed that the program requires commitment and dedication.

It's a program of sorts that 4iiii Innovations founders Victoria Brilz and Kip Fyfe, who will be involved with Cochrane SMARTstart as mentors, wished existed back in the late 1990s when they started Dynastream Innovations – which they sold to Garmin in 2006.

The couple got local 4iii up and running in 2012 and are excited to see their community of nearly 30 years evolve into a tech hub.

"We certainly mentor a lot already in Calgary with the A100 ... we're pretty excited," explained Fyfe of the Calgary-based tech/innovation hub for industry professionals and start ups alike.

"When we sold Dynastream people were coming to use for advice," added Brilz. "Our vision is that Cochrane can become a centre of excellence for tech and high tech ... a tech hub."

Program intake will be for around 12 applicants, with possible program expansion depending on demand. It's free to apply but successful applicants will be met with a modest $300 price tag.

Those with a business idea, a recent launch or who have been in business for less than three years may be eligible for the program.
