Registration is open for the ninth annual Monumental Tournament of Aces but spots are filling up fast.

“We are hoping to sell out … it is always a great day for our family, to remember Lindsay and get together with her friends,” said Kelly Kimmett, Founder of the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation.

“We are hoping for good weather but it is always fun no matter the temperature.”

So far the tournament already has 157 entries with 23 spots left to register.

Last year ,the Tournament of Aces raised $76,000 to support the warm water therapy pool project at the new aquatic/curling facility, which is currently being constructed next to the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.

This year funds from the tournament will go to support the Cochrane Search & Rescue and the Rancheview School Playground. Organizers said last year’s event was “truly memorable and a little bit chilly with a record of number of golfers.”

“Sponsorship is very strong, we lost some sponsors from the oil patch but local businesses have stepped up this year,” Kimmett said.

The Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Foundation was started after the death of Lindsay, a Cochrane resident, in 2008. She was an aspiring doctor and “was destined to accomplish great things”.

After her death, her friends and family started the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial Foundation, which provides multiple annual scholarships and sponsorships in the area.

After this year the Kimmett family will start stepping back from the Tournament of Aces, organizing the event 50-50 this year and next year with the Rotary Club of Cochrane – with the club to completely take over by 2018.

“The original committee members are involved with the tournament and the annual Kimmett Cup and we were burning them out with two big events like this,” Kimmett said.

“It is definitely a community event, kind of a big community party and we want to see it continue … we are not going away completely, just stepping back slightly.”

The ninth annual Tournament of Aces takes place on Oct. 1 at the Links of Gleneagles in Cochrane, located at 100 Gleneagles Dr.

The cost to register for the event ranges from $150 for a single golfer with dinner up to a group of four for $600 with dinner; an extra dinner can be purchased for $50.
