A luxury home in Springbank, in the final stages of construction, became engulfed in fire Friday (Nov. 29) afternoon shortly after 4 p.m.

The majority of the 12,000 square-foot home was destroyed. When crews from Springbank, Redwood Meadows and Elbow Valley attended the scene the home was already 75 per cent involved.

Crews were able to save the garage. Rocky View County deputy fire chief Gary Barnett said the homeowners were storing personal items in the garage.

Firefighters arrived at the McKendrick Point property 15 minutes after interior decorators alerted authorities. Barnett said firefighters remained on the scene until 3 a.m. the following morning. The homeowner returned later that morning and met with Barnett at the property.

The large scale of the home required more resources to fight the fire, Barnett said. Firefighters responded with three engines and three water tenders. The rural property has hydrants, but the water flow couldn’t be relied on.

Barnett said the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
