Stay safe this Halloween

Know how Frankenstein likes his potatoes? -Monster-Mashed

Halloween is finally here and kids will be wearing their scariest, funniest or cutest costumes as they knock away on doors in search of the ultimate candy house.

Jeff Avery, an inspector with Fire Services, has some tips for trick-or-treaters going into the night.

"The three main ones are dress with illuminated costumes, stay in a group, dress for the weather and have a great time."

Avery went on to add that home owners can do their part by keeping outside lights on to help children see where they are going. He also mentioned for parents to go through candy bags with their children after they've gotten home from trick-or-treating.

Motorist are encouraged to take precautions as neighbourhoods will be swarmed with ghosts and ghouls. It is important for children to remember to not dart across roads or back alleys diagonally and to look both ways before crossing streets. Avery added the Fire Department will be doing their rounds around Cochrane making sure communities and children are enjoying themselves and remaining out of harm's way.

"We are going to be taking the fire trucks out and handing out candy as well, we like to drive around the neighbourhood and have a look at all the kids and make sure they're safe and just let them know that we are out and about as well," explained Avery.

When asked what he will be dressed up as, Avery chuckled and said "We will be dressed up as Fire Fighters." A pretty reasonable costume choice, I'd say.
