Two Mitford students earned highest honours when they received the Principal’s Award at the school’s awards ceremony Thursday.

“It’s a massive honour,” Mikaela Murphy said after receiving a ring box with a paper cutout of what the ring will look like once it is sized.

“The school is amazing.”

Described as “polite and considerate” Murphy was picked for the Principal’s Award for mentoring young students and helping students who “found school difficult.”

Second recipient, Dominic Mills, also got a shout-out for mentoring students.

“He has grown a great deal and I’ve seen him step up a lot,” said Mitford principal Nancy Dutchik.

Mills was also nominated for helping kids who were being bullied.

“I feel pretty good,” Mills said after accepting the award.

His proud mother wrapped her arms around her son after taking a photo of Mills with his certificate.

“This is really special,” he said.

Twenty other students were also recognized from Grade 4 to Grade 8 for Pride Awards nominated by fellow students and ROAR awards (socially Responsible, celebrate Originality, take Action, build Respect) nominated by teachers.

Rocky View Schools trustee Fiona Gilbert was in attendance and shared advice from her favourite philosopher, Winnie the Pooh, telling parents and youth, “You are braver than you believe and smarter than you think.”

Dutchik also thanked the parents and volunteers who helped make all the activities at the school possible, honouring volunteer of the year Judy Heck, who was not in attendance that night.

“We couldn’t do the things we do without them,” Dutchik said.
