Summer festival seeking sponsors

What more could you ask for from a summer festival?

Sponsors and volunteers would be nice, according to organizer Marni Fedeyko.

With two months left to fundraise, the two-day summer festival has already announced a movie in the park, with a photo booth, music, traditional First Nation dancers, pony rides, henna, face-painting, games and a list of food trucks.

“Money is slow to come in but Cochrane businesses are usually so generous,” Fedeyko said.

“I know how important events are to this town and businesses usually rally around us and do what they can to help us out.”

This will be the second annual summer festival hosted by Cochrane Light Up, a group of volunteers who organize a variety of community events including the Light Up winter festival.

Learning from last year, organizers are turning the festival into a two-day event and switching the date from July 1 to the last week of June instead.

“Last year, we did (the festival) on Canada Day but the Town of Cochrane does their own thing and we didn’t want to compete so decided to have our own festival,” Fedeyko said.

Currently organizers are still finalizing details while seeking volunteers and sponsors to ensure a bigger and better festival.

“The event was good last year but was slow to catch on but I’m hoping this year will be better,” Fedeyko said.

Cochrane vendors are encouraged to contact organizers for partnership and showcasing opportunities, as the volunteer group wants to keep the festival as “local” as possible.

Movie tickets are currently on sale for the Saturday screening of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. Organizers said ticket sales are already up and the ticket price will continue to increase monthly until the day of the screening.

“Tickets will still be available at the gate but it is better to get them early, I would love to see 1,000 people out there,” Fedeyko said.

Summer Light Up will be hosted on June 25 and 26 at the historic Cochrane Ranche Site, located along Highway 1A, west of town.

“The more money we bring in, the more money we can put into back into it,” Fedeyko said.
