A 12-year-old died due to fatal injuries in an off road vehicle accident this past weekend.

Cochrane RCMP, EMS and Kananaskis Emergency Services were called to McLean Creek after a side by side rolled over with a father and 12-year-old son, from Calgary, at 12:53 p.m. on Saturday, June 4.

Upon their arrival, they were met by a group of bystanders who explained a male in his early teens was injured and located a significant distance in the backcountry.

Due to the terrain, Kananaskis Emergency Service personnel were assisted by Kananaskis Country Public Safety Specialists along with Alpine Helicopters and long-lined into the area.

They were able to extricate the teen to waiting ground paramedics and also a STARS Air Ambulance flight team, but despite efforts from ground and air paramedics, the 12-year-old was determined deceased at the scene.

Original reports stated the father and son were wearing helmets but upon future investigation, it was determined the father and son were not wearing helmets or seat belts. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors and no charges will be laid.

RCMP and the Calgary Medical examiner’s office will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the collision.

The names of those involved are not being released.
