Terry Fox Run back in Cochrane

The 19th annual Terry Fox Run is in Cochrane this Sunday.

The 19th annual Terry Fox Run is in Cochrane this Sunday.

This is the 36th year for Terry’s Marathon of Hope, an annual fundraising run that started in 1980 after Terry Fox was forced to have his right leg amputated six inches above the knee because of osteogenic sarcoma (bone) cancer.

The 18-year-old Canadian made it his mission to raise awareness and funds for cancer and ran 143 days and more than 5,000 km before dying of cancer. The run has since been held annually in communities throughout Canada, raising more than $650 million to date.

Participants can choose between the set five-kilometre walk or 10-km distance or choose their own distance. Both dogs and bicycles are welcome.

Last year, approximately 100 people attended Cochrane’s Terry Fox Run and raised $14,053. The value made Cochrane the 13th top fundraiser in the province out of 87 runs. It was the best fundraising year for the Cochrane run.

The walk will start at Mitford Park with registration open at 10 a.m. and the walk/run to start at 11 a.m.

Participants must make a donation, which can be made the day of the event or collected in advance by registering at terryfox.org.
