As we collectively embrace the incoming new decade it wouldn’t be a bad idea to make some self improvements.

The Better Human Leader Lunch ‘n' Learn three-part series is coming to Cochrane on Jan. 16, Jan. 30 and Feb. 13 at the Cochrane Movie House. The series that focuses on ‘Inspiring People Potential’ strives to bring our community together to network, build connections and level-up leadership skills.

“Better Human Leader, a division of the Being a Better Human Being movement, is all about empowering human connection,” said Robynn Stirrett, VP of Learning and Education Services at the Calgary-based organization Being a Better Human Being. The content in the series is tailored to supporting leaders in connecting with themselves, connecting with others, and connecting with the world so they can inspire potential in their people and achieve exceptional results.

“The company's seeing the most success are those whose leaders can inspire and engage teams to accomplish more than they thought possible without using fear tactics and burning out their staff.” She adds that the skills required to achieve this success are less technical in nature and are more centred around the ability to connect with others and align them to a common purpose in the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world.

Each day of the series will begin at 11:30 a.m. and includes a brown bag lunch from Guy’s Cafe. At 12:05 p.m. participants will learn from a team of certified executive coaches that will share relevant, actionable, research-based content on the value of being a better human leader.

Topics will include 'presenteeism' at work, making conversations matter and embracing a coaching culture.

The event concludes at 1 p.m. and allows participants to stick around and mingle, or go back to their busy jobs with renewed energy and practical and applicable skills with an action plan to inspiring potential in other people.

The event’s Eventbrite listing explains that the Being a Better Human Being movement launched last September and is committed to empowering human connection at work and at home and increases awareness around the ways people forget to be ‘human’ in their busy daily interactions and in managing societal pressure to achieve.

“One of the most impactful ways a leader can inspire and develop other leaders is through meaningful connection,” said Stirrett.

“Connection to me is being open-minded and open-hearted, showing some vulnerability and realness in interactions, not feeling pressure to be the ‘smartest in the room’, but really leaning into their own areas of expertise and encouraging others to do the same in the spirit of leveraging our collective genius.”

Hal Wolf, owner of the Cochrane Movie House, welcomes the unique opportunity where instead of being entertained at his venue, attendees will be learning.

“Any time we can have a professional series of this calibre, hosted in Cochrane to make Cochrane leaders even better, it’s a win-win all the way around,” Wolf said.

“We have big city flavour in tech, in entertainment, in recreation, among other things and now in leadership development.”
