Residents living on Glenbow Drive said they feel “forgotten” as the safety concerns are rising, along with the noise levels.

Nine families from households along the street held a meeting Wednesday night with the Town of Cochrane, bylaw services and RCMP to try to find a solution.

“It feels like it just became a forgotten road, it started five years ago and has become busier and busier and noisier and gotten worst,” said resident Keith Garner.

“I don’t blame the police or bylaw, I know they are busy but sometimes it just feels like this area is ignored.”

Edgar, who asked only his first name be used for the article, brought the issue forward to the Town of Cochrane administration last December.

“Cars race up and down the road, and the noise is unbearable,” Edgar said.

“It started happening years ago, people use this road as a drag strip and people don’t stop for kids anymore… it is dangerous.”

Other residents wrote letters to the editor calling Glenbow Drive a “death trap.”

“I'm requesting some kind of law enforcement control/monitoring of the traffic on Glenbow Drive … At any time of the day or night, and any day of the week, this street has become a drag strip for every person in this town who thinks their vehicle is the fastest,” Rhonda Phillips stated in her letter.

“I can attest that these vehicles are loud and annoying not to mention dangerous. It's only a matter of time before one of these clowns hit a kid, a dog, an adult pedestrian or even another car.”

The issue became evident earlier in March when an 11-year-old boy was hit while crossing the street at the crosswalk at Glenbow Drive and Glenpatrick Road. He was knocked back by an SUV.

“Town staff previously met with a group of Glenbow residents regarding speed and noise concerns on Glenbow Drive. We’re meeting with them again to discuss enforcement options. A sound wall was discussed at the previous meeting, but there are no plans for a wall at this time,” said Laurie Drukier, Cochrane’s senior communication advisor.

Residents said they would like to see more law enforcement in the area and Edgar mentioned the possibility of putting in a sound barrier fence.

“I’m not criticizing anyone, I just want police and bylaw to be made aware of the situation… we feel forgotten,” Garner said.
