Who knew crime could end in giving back to the community?

That is what happened when eight-year-old Nathan Wagman had $100 worth of empty bottles stolen from the family garage earlier this year.

In response to an Eagle article (Thieves nab eight-year-old’s bottles, June 30), the paper received several emails and phone calls from Cochrane and area residents offering to donate empty bottles or cash.

All inquiries were forwarded along to the family, who at the time were out of town for a couple of weeks.

“It is very moving to realize how wonderful and caring so many people are,” Paul Wagman, Nathan’s father said in an earlier interview.

The Wagman family was “moved” by the support and after a brief discussion with Nathan decided to give any extra donations to a “community cause.” Nathan ‘immediately’ picked the Cochrane & Area Humane Society.

Nathan said he chose the humane society because he adopted a kitten from the shelter two months earlier.

“Thank you,” Nathan said, in response to the community support he received.

The family drove to the shelter last Friday to donate the extra funds, presenting $275 to the furry friends waiting for their forever homes.

“Thanks to the community for teaching Nathan there are nice people and a sense of community in Cochrane,” Paul Wagman said.

The Cochrane and Community Humane Society was founded in 1998, receiving charitable status in 1999. The society’s mission is to provide food, shelter, medical care and the opportunity for adoption; to unwanted, surrendered, lost and unclaimed animals while promoting responsible pet ownership through educational programs.

For more information on how to help (or adopt) any of the animals with the Cochrane & Area Humane Society, contact the shelter at 403-932-2072 or go to the website atcochranehumane.ca
