Love it or hate it, Daylight Savings Time Begins this weekend. That means everyone in Alberta will be ending the weekend with an hour less sleep.

The clock will spring forward at 2 a.m. on Sunday, so those with important appointments that morning or who don't want to miss church, remember to dial the clock ahead.

Not everyone in Canada has to lose an hour sleep each year to Daylight Savings Time. Most of Saskatchewan, Fort Nelson, Creston and the Peace River Regional District in B.C., don’t change their clocks. A few towns in Ontario and Quebec’s north shore also don’t do Daylight Saving.

There are differing views of the necessity for Daylight Savings Time and some jurisdictions have considered dumping the tradition, but there might be practical reason to continue the practice.

A study in 1975 showed that by shifting an hour of daylight into the evening hours, energy consumption was reduced, though a study a year later refuted those claims. There are also those who suggest an extra hour of light each day during the summer is beneficial to our mental health.

Then there are the farmers who many benefit from a little extra light during the evenings when harvest is underway. In fact, the belief that Daylight Savings Time was lobbied for by farmers has been debunked as a myth.
