October 13 is the last day for United Conservative Party (UCP) cardholders to register to vote to determine the first official leader of the UCP Oct. 28.

Leadership frontrunners Brian Jean and Jason Kenney have included Cochrane in their stomping grounds to spread the word about citizen action to determine the future leader of the official opposition.

“It’s all about registration – if they don’t register by the 13th at 5 p.m., they can’t vote,” said Brian Jean, who stopped at the Tim Hortons in West Valley last Thursday to meet with supporters as part of his road trip on his way to Calgary, with several small town stops in between.

Jason Kenney will be at the Cochrane Legion Oct. 18 to spread the message about voting for leadership of the recently-formed UCP. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the event starts at 7 p.m.

“Cochrane has one of the highest per capita UCP memberships in Alberta,” said Owen Neal, co-captain for the Jason Kenney campaign for the Banff-Cochrane riding.

Neal is also co-captain for Alberta Can’t Wait, the grassroots movement that backed the unity movement – leading to the dissolution of the PC and Wildrose parties and formation of the UCP.

Neal is confident Kenney has the teeth to take on the difficult task of provincial leadership – highlighting that the former federal minister has the experience to take on Ottawa and represent Alberta’s interest, beyond fighting the provincial NDP government.

He added that the event next week makes the entire movement come “full circle” – as it was following Kenney’s July 2016 visit to the Cochrane Legion that inspired the unity movement.

Voting will take place Oct. 28 and will be conducted online and over the phone. Registration is open to all UCP card holders 14 years of age and older who purchased a membership before Sept. 29.
