Tour de Bowness hits Horse Creek Road this Saturday

The Tour de Bowness, the annual cycling event put on by Bow Cycle and Sports out of Calgary, will be utilizing the scenic panorama of Horse Creek Road for part of its race this weekend (Aug. 2).

The Tour de Bowness, the annual cycling event put on by Bow Cycle and Sports out of Calgary, will be utilizing the scenic panorama of Horse Creek Road for part of its race this weekend (Aug. 2).

Sanctioned by the Alberta Bicycle Association, Bob Grunewald, marketing director for Bow Cycle and Sports, said the race requires that cyclists hold a racing licence, and racers would be in one of five categories, one being the highest.

Grunewald said aside from rider safety, the biggest concern is making sure the race disrupts people’s activities as little as possible.

“Our marshals are instructed to only hold people up if the racers are close and other than that just to let them know the race is going on,” he said. “Horse Creek Road is a beautiful road that is fairly quiet to hold a race on.”

Grunewald said they do notify area residents of the race and pay a small fee to Rocky View County.

The Horse Creek Road portion is the first phase of the race; the second is at Canada Olympic Park, and final, Aug. 4, in Bowness in Calgary.

This will be the 12th annual Tour de Bowness event and the fifth time the race has utilized Horse Creek Road.
