Two dead in rollover

Two people have been killed and five others are injured following a single-vehicle rollover at the weigh scales on the Trans-Canada Highway near Hermitage Road on April 20.

Two people have been killed and five others are injured following a single-vehicle rollover at the weigh scales on the Trans-Canada Highway near Hermitage Road on April 20.

Emergency crews were called to the accident on the eastbound lanes of the highway at approximately 10 km west of the intersection with Highway 22. The rollover occurred at about 9:15 a.m. when the van lost control and rolled multiple times.

Five passengers were ejected from the vehicle, of those, one male and one female in their mid 30s, were pronounced dead on the scene. Two passengers, a female driver and male passenger, were extricated from the vehicle.

The driver, in her mid 30s, was air-lifted by STARS ambulance to Foothills Hospital in Calgary in life-threatening condition. Four other passengers, three females and one male with ages ranging from mid 20s to 50s, were transported by EMS to Foothills Hospital. All are reported to be in serious condition.

The Cochrane RCMP are currently investigating the incident. The eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway were closed and traffic was diverted to a single lane via the scales.

Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash.
