Victim Services gets new set of wheels from Cochrane Toyota

On June 10, the Cochrane & Area Victim Services Society (CAVSS) received a 2014 Highlander SUV from Cochrane Toyota.

The LE All Wheel Drive vehicle was leased from Toyota to help provide the Society’s staff and volunteers with a highly functional, top quality vehicle, which would make their work safer as they assist the local RCMP detachment in bringing support to victims of crime and tragedy, and respond to calls in the community.

The Highlander has the aptitude to transport up to eight passengers along with emergency supplies and gear when necessary.

“Our older vehicle wasn’t quite doing the job that we wanted,” said the society’s program administrator Sarah Owen. “So, we approached Cochrane Toyota about acquiring a new (vehicle), because we have a long relationship with them, and have received a lot of support over the years.”

“Our advocates and staff are on the road at all times of the day and night, and in all weather conditions,” said Steven Grossick, president of CAVSS in a media release.

“The All Wheel Drive capability (of the vehicle), and 4x4 option when required in difficult situations, will provide a safe and practical transportation option.”

“I am pleased to continue supporting the efforts of Victim Services through the lease of the All Wheel Drive Highlander,” said Alex Baum, owner of Cochrane Toyota, who, 12 years ago, supplied the society with its current vehicle, a 2002 Dodge Caravan.

“It is important to remember that the safety of the society’s volunteer advocates and staff, often in remote areas with challenging driving conditions, is vital to their mission.”

Currently, the society is looking to explore options for the disposal of its Dodge Caravan (excellent condition, low mileage).

“We hope to have a unique opportunity later this year for someone to acquire a very serviceable vehicle,” said Grossick. “(We also hope) at the same time to raise some funds that will support the financing of the vehicle and its operation.”

As for what the upcoming opportunity will be?

“We haven’t made a decision yet, but we’re close,” said Owen. “When we know what’s happening, there will be an announcement.”
