Wildrose nominations for the Banff-Cochrane riding opened Jan. 7, with the party seeking potential candidates for the Wildrose constituency.

“Nominations will close Jan. 16 and if there is a contested race, there will be a vote (28 days later, Feb. 13),” said Ian Cook, Wildrose Constituency Association president.

Cook said the decision to open up nominations is prompted by the likelihood that the Prentice government will call an early election, possibly in the spring of 2015, adding that this is likely due to coming bad news (cutbacks) with the rapidly falling oil prices.

Scott Wagner remains the sole candidate in the running for the local nomination — a businessman, husband and father of two, who resides south of Hwy 1 along Hwy 22.

Former candidate Paul McLean withdrew from the race two weeks ago following the unexpected news that former Wildrose leader Danielle Smith crossed the floor to the PC party — along with eight other Wildrose MLAs.
