A 53-year old female from Stoney Nakoda First Nation was struck and killed by a pickup truck Oct. 1 when attempting to flag down a vehicle on Hwy 22.

The woman was experiencing mechanical issues with her vehicle, when she got out to flag down help, 2 km north of Hwy 8.

The woman had her vehicle parked on the northbound lane when she was attempting to stop a southbound pickup truck hauling a covered utility trailer and was struck and killed.

Cochrane RCMP Sgt. Darlene White said due to the time that evening, it was dark and the driver did not see the woman.

Cochrane RCMP responded to the call at approximately 10:15 p.m. along with EMS and Fire. The woman was pronounced dead on scene and the driver and passenger of the pickup did not sustain injuries.

Cochrane RCMP are continuing to investigate the incident, but have released that alcohol is not believed to have been a factor. So far, no charges have been laid, as police are awaiting the medical examiner reports.
