Girls in Cochrane are invited to have fun and participate in physical activities this Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Go Girl event at Manachaban Middle School.
The one-day workshop concentrates on the importance of physical literacy, health and wellness for girls between the ages of 10 to 14 – an age that can be a very influential time, according to Adelle Forzley, program coordinator for the Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane and Area.
“It is a really great time for self exploration,” explained Forzley. “It is also a nice age to be able to bring them together and to learn from one another and offer them a safe space.”
According to Sport 4 Life Cochrane, physical literacy is the ability of young people to participate in a variety of sports successfully by teaching them fundamental movement skills that are incorporated into a number of different sports.
Forzley said that although physical literacy is also important for boys, this program offers a respectful environment where girls who are going through a lot of the same issues and concerns can get a sense of connectedness and togetherness.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is put on through a collaborative effort by the Boys and Girls Club of Cochrane and Area, PLAY Cochrane, the Town of Cochrane, Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre, Sport 4 Life and InMotion Network.
Forzley said the day would kick off with registration at 8:45 a.m. and the keynote speaker, Olympian Lindsay Alcock. The girls would then break up into groups and participate in activities such as archery, nutrition, hip hop lessons, self defense, badminton and a Sport 4 Life presentation.
“They will get an opportunity to try out different sports and learn a little bit more about who they are in activity and what they want to explore,” she said.
The cost of registration is $20; to register call 403-851-2534 or visit online at cochrane.ca/eservices.
