Checkstop, long weekend

As many made their way home following the long weekend, it was relatively safe in regards to travel with no fatalities to report.

"It's always a busy time of year for us and that's why we have extra enforcement," said Tom Kalis, S/Sgt with the Cochrane RCMP. Heritage Day creates heavy volumes of traffic heading west. The Trans-Canada Highway saw a number of crashes caused by those following too closely, which resulted in police being busy over the weekend.

There were also extra patrols in the Bragg Creek and Waiparous areas as well as a couple of checkstops – at Highway 1 and Old Banff Coach Road in the evening of Aug. 4, and a second one at 1A and Highway 22 at 2 a.m on the Aug. 6.

Earlier in the year, Cochrane RCMP stated its goal was to help ensure people enjoyed their long weekends safely. This Heritage Day long weekend, the detachment was successful in that goal , with no fatalities in the jurisdiction.

"It was a very good year for us." said Kalis.
